明治政府軍は関東制圧後、旧幕府派の中心・会津藩を攻撃するため、北日本へ進撃します。
これに対し、徳川家（旧徳川幕府指導者）との関係が比較的浅い丹羽氏の二本松藩が、会津藩と共に決死の抵抗をします。
二本松藩は住民皆が最後まで抵抗し（会津藩以上）、会津藩や仙台藩、米沢藩からも可能な限りの支援を受け、薩長同盟の理不尽（会津の叛逆者指定）に対する抵抗の信念を貫きました。
この地域の明治政府軍のリーダー・板垣退助は、敵であったにも関わらず彼らの考えを理解し、日本の一致回復を目指してその名誉回復に尽力し、後に自由民権運動では、彼らと協力するようになります。
After suppressed Kanto, Meiji Government advanced to Northern Japan for attack Aizu Domain Center of Former Shogunate Group.
Nihonmatsu Domain that relations between Tokugawa Family (Leaders of Former Tokugawa Shogunate) was thin than most of others resisted with Aizu Domain desperately.
All of residents of Nihonmatsu Domain resisted till the end (More than Aizu Domain), & some Domains (Aizu, Sendai, Yonezawa) supported them as possible, & sticked their belief against absurd of Satcho Alliance (Rebel Reservation against Aizu) till the end.
Leader of Meiji Government Army in this region Taisuke Itagaki understood their Ideology even they are his enemy, & committed to the restoration of their honor for restore Unity of Japan, & cooperated with them in Liberty Democracy Movement on later.
