明治政府軍が北日本に旧幕府軍を追い詰めた後、最前線となった北越の長岡藩は、河井継之助の主導によって武装中立を決め、明治政府軍と交渉しました（小千谷談判）が、一蹴されます。
そして明治政府軍は長岡を攻撃しますが、長岡藩は事前に購入していた米英製武器で明治政府軍相手に善戦し、一度勝利します（八丁沖の戦）が、最後は明治政府軍が勝利します。
その後明治政府軍は旧幕府軍の要衝・新潟を制圧し、北越から旧幕府軍を追放しました。
河合継之助と長岡藩は、軍事力を平和を守るために使うという考えの下、最後まで明治政府と旧幕府軍の間に立つ方法を貫き、それが拒絶された後も自らの故郷のために全てを捨て、その信念を貫いたのです。
After Meiji Government hunt down Former Shogunate Army in Northern Japan, Nagaoka Domain that be forced to stand in the front decided Militarized Neutral by lead of Tsugunosuke Kawai, & negotiated about it with Meiji Government (Ojiya Conference), but they rejected it.
And Meiji Government Army attacked Nagaoka, but Nagaoka Army fought well by New Weapons those made in UK & US, & acquired Victory (Battle of Hatchooki), but finally Meiji Government Army acquired Victory.
After that, Meiji Government Army suppressed Niigata Key Point of Former Shogunate Army, & expelled Former Shogunate Army from Hokuetsu.
Tsugunosuke Kawai & Nagaoka Domain stick their means that stand between Meiji Government & Former Shogunate Army till the end, & surrendered their lives after it was rejected, & stick their belief under Idea that use Military Power for protect Peace.
