日華事変
満州事変（1931〜1933）後、日本は中華民国政府と停戦（塘沽協定）していましたが、1937年に中国共産党軍（中華民国政府の中心・国民党と和解し協力）が北京郊外で日本軍（合法的に駐屯）に対する武力挑発を行い（盧溝橋事件）、日本軍はそれに対応し、そのまま中国全土に対する軍事作戦を実行しました。
日本軍は首都南京を占領して中華民国国民政府（親日政府）を樹立させ、中華民国政府（重慶に逃げました）軍を各地で追い詰め、共産党ゲリラ（八路軍）も各地でボコしまくります。
その過程で日本軍は大勢のゲリラや便衣兵（民間人のフリをした兵士）を処刑しましたが、事実上の戦時下ゆえ情報が錯綜としていたのもあって、欧米メディアが間違って情報を発信してしまった、ということが何件かありました。
さて、中国に大きな利権を持っていたアメリカはイギリスは、これを見て危機感を覚え、日本に対し資源を禁輸するなどの嫌がらせを行います（ABCD包囲網）。
これにより、資源に乏しい日本はさらなる軍事行動の拡大（仏領インドシナ進駐）に追い込まれ、それによりアメリカとの対立はエスカレートし、ついには理不尽極まる要求（ハル・ノート。アメリカやイギリス、フランスのブロック経済が日本を追い込んだことを棚に上げ、一方的に日本を非難していました）を突きつけたため、日本はアメリカとの戦争に追い込まれました（太平洋戦争/極東戦争）。
日本はアメリカとイギリス、中華民国との対決を強いられ、アメリカには各地で敗れましたが、イギリスやオランダにはインパール（インド東部）以外で勝ち続け、中華民国にはほとんど勝利を重ねました。
しかしアメリカの容赦ない攻撃に追い詰められて無条件降伏し、自動的に中華民国にも敗れました。
（ちなみに日明戦争/1592〜1598同様、中国は日本に対する勝利を惨勝/凄まじい犠牲を払った上でやっと勝てた、と表現しています。）
この軍事衝突は、中国共産党が実戦経験を積み、後に中国の実権を奪うことになるきっかけでもあり、同時に第二次世界大戦の本格化の引き金でもあったのです。

Sino-Japanese Conflict
After Mukden Incident (1931-1933), Japan ceasefired between ROC Government (Tanggu Truce), but CCP Army (Reconciliated with Kuomintang Center of ROC Government and cooperated) provocated Japanese Army (Stationed Legally) by Military Power in Suburb of Beijing (Lugou Bridge Incident), so Japan fought back and carried out MIlitary Operation against Whole China.
Japanese Army occupied Nanjing and established RNGROC Government (Pro Japan Government), and hunt down ROC (Escaped to Chongqing) Army, and beat up CCP Guerilla (8th Route Army) in many places also.
In the Process of it, Japanese Army executed many Guerilla and Covert Soldiers, but because of Information was confused under de facto wartime, European and Northern American Media forecast News with some mistakes in some cases.
So, US and UK that had so large Concessions in China felt Senses of Danger while saw the situation, so harassed Japan by Resource Embargo and some other Economical Harrasments (ABCD Encirclement).
Japan was forced Conflict between US, UK, ROC, and be defeated in many places by US, however never be defeated by UK and Netherland except in Imphal (Eastern India), and won and won in many places against ROC.
But be hunt down by merciless US attack and surrendered unconditionally, so be defeated by ROC automatically.
